PCA
Club Race at CMP
November
6-7, 2004
The Fall CMP Club Race typically gets a
significantly higher turn-out than the Spring race, and this year was no
exception. There were 3 sprint race groups and 2 enduro groups.
Fresh off some strong Grand-Am
performances, Cory Friedman was driving Autometrics' #14 Cup car in GTA
for the sprint, and he and Leh Keen shared the enduro. Rick
Brownyard was running his first race in his '02 GT3 Cup and this was Mac
McGehee's 2nd race in his '00 Cup. Steve Johnson had commitments
for the weekend, so the Fun race on Friday was his main event.
This Fun Race was certainly one of the more exciting events of the
weekend. A huge HP turbo car lead the field with Cory, Steve and
Orwicz right behind. Steve lead the GTC3 cars easily, but Friedman
moved up to challenge the turbo who had been at the top of the charts
all weekend. They swapped positions a few times, and at the end of
the 12 lap dash, Cory took the checkers less than a second ahead of the
turbo. Johnson ran away from the rest of the competition in his
class.
The Fun Race was the first for rookie
racer Bill Martin in his D class 964 Cup. He lost a few positions
in the first Practice start and sat 3rd in class at the start of the Fun
race. Bill chased down and passed another 964 for 2nd and
eventually caught and fought with the class leading car before passing
him for a win in his first race. Qualifying for the sprint race,
Martin repeated his performance taking pole in class. He was
easily the fastest stock class car this weekend, winning the sprint and
enduro in D class. He also deservedly won the Rookie award and
likely set a new class record for D cars at CMP. We'd like to congratulate
Bill on a remarkable effort.
Cory
started the sprint on the outside pole, but was not able to challenge
for the overall lead. His race ended early with a broken throttle
cable. Rick and Mac both had good races, picking up 4 and 6 positions,
respectively, putting Mac in the top 5 in GTC3.
Cory
pulled double-duty in the enduro, starting the race in Rick's GTC3 car
and finishing in our GTA car. With the turbo not competing, Leh
easily took the overall pole with Cory right behind him. Mac
started the enduro 5th in class. Leh broke out to a huge lead, and
he and Cory won the race convincingly. Rick brought home a podium,
finishing 3rd in GTC3 with Mac right behind him, besting his sprint
result with a 4th place finish.
The
next PCA race is at Roebling, and we expect similarly strong
results. Mac and Rick are becoming more competitive as they grow
more familiar with their GT3 Cup cars. Bill will likely be a
front-runner in any race he enters. Leh will be running some new
hardware, and Cory will likely be back with our Cup car. Many of
our other customers are going to Roebling to compete as well, so we are
looking forward to a great event. |
