2005
996 / 997 GT3 Cup Cars
Rumors and photos are surfacing of the
997-based Cup car like the ones to the right (images from www.rennteam.com message board). We have been told from an extremely reliable
source that there is a 997-based GT3 Cup, but US customers will be
receiving models based on the 996 in 2005. This is the same
scenario as when Porsche switched from the 993-based cup to the
996-based GT3 in 1998. Only Supercup teams receive the new model,
while US, Carrera Cup, and everyone else will get the old model.
Only 30 of the 997 will be made, one for each of the 25 Supercup drivers
and 5 spare cars. Porsche Motorsports develops the new model in
the Supercup for a season before selling the car to the rest of the
world.
The 997 Cup will feature improved
aerodynamics and brakes over the current model and utilizes a sequential
transmission analogous to the GT3RSR. At this point the
displacement and power of the engine are not known. |
